For the laid-off designer.
Luckily, my job has not yet been affected by this nightmare that is our current economy; I count myself very fortunate to be among the still-employed (knock on wood, or fake wood stickers, as the case may be).
But for those of you who have been shit-canned, here’s something cool to set your portfolio apart from the others in your job search: Mixit preprinted labels for your portfolio CDs/DVDs. I picked these up tonight at the Container Store when I was there in a desperate attempt to try to stimulate the economy by spending $100 I can’t really afford on two Karim Rashid Oh! chairs. I threw in an extra $5.99 for these labels, my cheap way of giving the Great Recession BOTH MY MIDDLE FINGERS.
My husband’s job, unfortunately, was affected. He was laid off along with 1/4 of his energy technology start-up about a month ago. He’s a highly competent, experienced, articulate product manager with an MBA in technology management from the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business. He is passionate about energy and the environment. We’re both passionate about being able to continue to pay our mortgage and feed our two beautiful Weimaraners. We are NOT passionate about the prospect of having to sleep in our car. If you have any leads in the energy/green technology sector, please let me know.
He won’t need fake wood labels as he doesn’t have a portfolio CD and will probably be printing his résumé on sustainable bamboo.
