I want one! No, wait! I want 20!!

Vanillacup

So, here it is, September. I have lived in DC for almost one year and I have finally found a culinary treat that surpasses anything in this category that Seattle has to offer. Which is just shocking to me since in my opinion (and the opinions of lots of reviewers on Yelp, I’ve noticed, as well as other DC transplants I’ve talked to here and there) the food scene in DC sucks ass. And I have pretty much been bitching and moaning about this ever since I got here. Ask Will.

But today, I was pleasantly surprised. I finally went to Georgetown Cupcake, taking Michaela with me since she’s in town. Last night at Will’s surprise birthday party, my niece told me that we had to go to Georgetown Cupcake and try the Red Velvet. So, that’s exactly what we did. And the Vanilla Squared. And the Chocolate Cubed (the Vanilla Squared ended up being my favorite).

I will note here that I was skeptical and dubious when Sarah said we had to try this place. Someone else had raved about this other cupcake place in DC, Cakelove. Will and I went there a few months ago and were completely underwhelmed. As in we don’t care if we ever go there again. The cupcakes were dry and the frosting left a nasty coating on the roof of our mouths. As if a tiny little oil tanker traveling across my tongue had run ashore against my teeth, leaving a cold, waxy grease slick from my tongue to my upper palate.

Yeah, I know. Nasty.

This was basically the same experience we had with the place in Seattle that sells cupcakes, Cupcake Royale. Completely perplexed as to why other people thought they were so good.

I was also doubtful because, since the quality of food here is so poor, people who’ve lived here a long time have low gastronomic standards. To people in DC, the really good food is about the same quality as the mediocre stuff in Seattle (and probably New York and San Francisco). Consequently, we have different mental models when it comes to good food. When a mid-Atlantic native tells me something’s "really good", I take it with a grain of salt because I know they don’t know what they’re missing (but to be fair, Sarah is actually from Baltimore, where I hear the food is much better).

But anyway, needless to say, these cupcakes are so damn good that I’m sitting here, writing a blog post about them. Now, if I can only find an as good or better Thai place, bubble tea shop, bakery, Indian restaurant, Italian ristorante, crèpe stand, espresso bar ….ah, the list goes on.
