The Namesake.

I went to see The Namesake at the Uptown last weekend with a friend. It was a great movie; good storyline, compelling characters. What I liked most, though, was the cinematography. Like the movie Brokeback Mountain, every frame of this film could have been made into a beautiful work of still photography. The lighting and composition was gorgeous and the colors? Almost edible. And strategic, too. During sad, turning points in the film, the palette is subdued and desaturated.

Mira Nair, the same director who brought us Monsoon Wedding, directed this film. Colorful cinematography is a hallmark of her work. For my own reference, the cinematographer was Frederick Elmes.

And in case you’re reading, Happy Birthday, Pat! And to my brother Seth, too.
