Titus.

One of the things I like best about my film class is the exposure I get to films I haven’t yet seen. Like Titus, for example. It’s a great filmic adaptation of Shakespeare’s revenge tragedy Titus Andronicus. To be honest, I got the gist of the movie but had a hard time following the details without Will’s help (I blame this on my sub-standard, rural public education – I’m ashamed to admit that I’ve never read any Shakespeare).

Anyway, it’s a beautiful film, directed by Julie Taymor, a renowned theatrical director (she directed the Broadway version of The Lion King as well as the movie Frida). The lighting is gorgeous, strongly influenced by her stage background, and the costumes are stunning. It’s also brilliant in the way she mixes time periods throughout the film. The cinematographer was Luciano Tovoli.

I’m watching how they made the film right now and the logistics and sheer number of players that go into making a film is simply astounding.

Oh, it was also a great film to watch considering I was in Rome not too long ago….
